Kefalos Local Area: Kefalos is a Greek town situated at the southwest side of the
island of Kos, 43 km from Kos Town and 18kms from Kos Airport. The older part of the
town is built on a rocky hill and is dominated by the imposing windmill of Papavasilis.
It is in the typical style of a Kos island village with its dense building and narrow
streets.
The purpose built resort of Kefalos sits beneath the old town from which it takes its
name. Kefalos offers an exceptional view across Kamari Bay, the largest and most
protected bay on the island; with its small island Kastri. The sea with its crystal
clear blue & turquoise water gives good visibility and is subsequently popular for a
wide range of water sports and there are plenty of services to cater for every taste.
The beaches vary between sand and shingle and if you have children, then the small
beach near the harbour is sandy and shallow.
The Beaches at Kamari Bay: The 5km long beach at Kamari surrounds a beautiful bay
of crystal clear blue water. The beach nearest the resort of Kefalos is mostly shingle
with the best sand found towards the eastern end of the shoreline. It’s normally easy
to find a quiet spot as the beach is so long and doesn’t get too crowded. The shoreline
gently shelves so it is safe for children, although care should be taken in the some
areas where windsurfers and boats proliferate in the Kefalos bay area.
Kefalos and Kamari beach are backed by the beautiful rugged volcanic landscape that
is typical of this part of Kos. There are a nice selection of traditional tavernas and
bars backing the Kamari beach where you can purchase a refreshing drink or delicious
lunch time snack.
Places to Visit around Kefalos:
• the ruins of a medieval castle
• the ancient site of Palatia
• the basilica of Ayios Stefanos at nearby Kamari
• the cave at Aspri Petra
• the Monastery of Ayios Ioannis (Thimianos)
• Mikro Limanaki beach at the north of Kefalos peninsula.
If you’re looking for booming night life, this isn’t the place for you – but if you’re looking
for a classic, idyllic Greek island holiday with warm hospitality and a laid back vibe, then
you’re looking in the right place. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do except lie in the
sun, there are plenty of traditional tavernas, cafes and restaurants in the locality. The
restaurant/snack bar at the Andreas Studios is well worth a visit any time of day and offers
anything from a full English breakfast to a hearty steak for dinner. And – don’t miss one of
Andreas’ famous barbeques – happy times to be had!
