With a colourful terrain of rolling mountain ranges, flowing rivers with waterfalls and a
host of saltwater lakes which are home to an exotic array of wildlife; there is plenty to
discover in the Dominican Republic. In the towns, architecture reflects eras of history, and colonial houses
line the picturesque streets. San Felipe Fort, a relic of 16th century colonisation and
Puerto Plata’s oldest building, makes an interesting tour. Alternatively, Ocean World marine
& animal park is a popular choice for all the family.
The Dominican Republic enjoys a year round, hot, tropical climate with temperatures
maintaining a steady average of around 25 degrees Celsius. There are rainy seasons
which affect different parts of the country over the months. The north’s wet season
is from October to April; and in the south the wettest months are from May to November.
The east coast tends to remain mostly dry. Cooler temperatures and less humidity are
expected between the months of November to April.
If you tire of lazing in the Dominican sun or participating in the various water sports on offer,
a pleasant afternoon can be spent browsing the souvenir shops of Punta Cana. Pretty
clothes, amber jewellery, cigars and locally produced rum, are just a few of the treats
on offer in the resort’s shops. Dining is usually provided by the all inclusive resorts,
however there are a selection of restaurants offering freshly caught seafood, international
cuisine as well as a choice of snacks and refreshments.
