Dining in Oporto SightseeingPlaces of Interest
Oporto like most Portuguese cities uses a lot of fresh seafood as its culinary theme. With a
prime location close to the sea, fresh seasonal fish is always on the menu. Another popular
dish is tripe which is cooked in red wine with beans, sausage, garlic and black pepper, to make
a delicious regional dish. Ribiera, on the banks of the Douro, is the best place for restaurants
and bars and offers scenic dining and a warm atmosphere.
Visit the Fundação de Serralves art gallery which is full of contemporary work. Discover the
churches of the city like Igreja do Carmo, which was built in 1768, and is styled in the
Portuguese Baroque manner. Cross the river and head to the Mosteiro de Serra do Pilar. It can
be found on the top of a steep hill and gives impressive views over the old city and Douro River.
Take a leisurely stroll through the Ribiera District which is home to a lively market during the
day. This is also popular in the evening for its lively bars and restaurants, which will keep you
well fed and entertained. Climb the 200 steps to the top of Torres dos Clérigos which is known as
being one of the tallest landmarks in the city. Cross the river to Vila Nova de Gaia which was
originally a rival port, and is still the home of port fortified wine.
